Luangta Ma Wat Tham Muang Na

Short Biography of
Venerable Acariya Varongkot Virivatharo (Luangta Ma)
Wat Phrommapanyo (Wat Tham Muang Na)

Thambon Muang Na, Amphor Chiang Dao

Chiang Mai, Thailand
Early Life
Luangta Ma's original name is Varongkot Suwannakun. He was born on November 23rd 1934 in the Noraniwat district of Sakon Nakhon, a north-eastern province of Thailand. His father's name is Wandee Suwannakun and his mother's name is Sorpar Suwannakun. His parents had three children of which Vorangkot was the second.

Ordination
Luangta Ma has been a lay disciple of Luangpu Du and practised meditation under Luang Pu's guidance for more than 20 years. When his teacher was over 70 years old, he implored Luangta Ma to ordain as a monk. Luangta Ma complied with his teacher's wish. He was ordained on Sunday, July 24th 1988 at 10:06 AM at Wat Buddhathaisawan in the Ayutthaya province. Venerable Ajahn Pathrakit (Luangpor Huan), the abbot of Wat Buddhathaisawan, was the preceptor of the ceremony. Venerable Ajahn Suangthorn Dhammanithed (nicknamed Boonsong) acted as first ordination teacher and Venerable Ajahn Pichit Kitarthorn (nicknamed Sanae) acted as the second ordination teacher.
Pilgrimage and Ascetic Practices
After Luangta Ma spent one lent in robes, he went to pay respect to Luangpor Huan and asked his permission to leave the monastery in order to go on a pilgrimage. He also took the Thirteen Austere Practices, which constitute an ascetic practice considered helpful by the Buddha for removing the defilements. Luangpor Huan gave his consent, upon which Luangta Ma went to pay respect to Luangpu Du at Wat Sakae. He arrived at night time when Luangpu Du was the only person residing at the abode at Wat Sakae. Luangpu Du gave him a sermon and wished him well. He finally added: “Wherever you stay, I will be with you. Take this amulet. If you need my assistance, just turn to the amulet.” With these words he gave him an amulet with Luangpu Du's image imprinted on it, some travel utensils, and 500 Baht in cash.
Luangpu Du told Luangta Ma to go up north, yet he did not state any reason for it. In the morning, Luangpu Du sent a monk to bring Luangta Ma a lunch box, since he knew that Luangta Ma was too busy with preparations that morning and didn't go on alms round.
After these events, Luangta Ma followed his master's advice and went north. He became a solitary wandering monk and practised Tudong (pilgrimage on foot) through northern Thailand for several years. He often lived in caves to practice meditation. He experienced  many odd and unusual occurrences during this time. One day he reached Prathat Jomjaeng which was formerly known as Prathat Jomkithi. At this place, he meditated in the open and prayed to find a secluded place suitable for solitary meditation. Miraculously, an old man appeared in the morning and told Luangta Ma about a remote cave in the forest of Muang Na. If it wasn't for the old man's story, he would moved onwards to the Four Buddha Footprints in Mae Rim.

Muang Na Cave
Luangta Ma, however, decided to follow the old man's lead. He sought the cave which the old man had told him about and -while on his way- asked Luangpu Du for guidance through serene contemplation. It wasn't long until Luangta Ma found the cave, which the locals simply called Muang Na cave. The cave was exactly as the old man had told him. When he arrived there, Luangta Ma took up mediation and contacted Luangpu Du through contemplation.
In 1990 it became known to Luangta Ma that Luangpu Du had left his physical body. He went to Ayutthaya to join the royal funeral ceremony. After the ceremony, he returned to the Muang Na. Since then Luangta Ma practised solitary meditation at the cave for more than ten years. During this time he was supported by the Thai and Shan villagers who live in the Muang Na area.
Originally, Luangta Ma set out to seek enlightenment in this life, as epitomised by the Arahat ideal. Yet, when he advanced his meditation practice, he connected to previous stores of Bodhicitta. He felt deep sympathy for all beings and prayed to stay on, rather than to pass into Nirvana, in order to help all beings in the heaven, human, animal, and hell realms.
Consequently, Luangta Ma decided to give up the solitary life in order to help others to practise. He began building a temple around the cave in Muang Na. At the same time, he started to teach the Dhamma to people who came to the temple and he instructed them in meditation practice.
In recent years, Luangta Ma was able to attract a considerable following. He is now widely recognised in Northern Thailand; he is also known for his great kindness. It is obvious to his students that Luangta Ma follows the ideal of the Bodhisattva. He teaches the Dhamma to his students, as well as meditation and amulet making in the tradition of Luangpu Du. Thus Luangta Ma continues the lineage of his great Ayutthayan master Luangpu Du.

尊者阿姜Suangthorn Dhammanithed(绰号Boonsong)是第一受戒师和尊者阿姜Pichit Kitarthorn(绰号Sanae)担任第二受戒师。

Luang Phor Kasem Kemagoh

Luang Por Kasem was one of the legendary famous monk in Thailand Temple who had passed away in BE2538 (1995) at the age of 83 years old.

He came into this world on Novemeber 28 in the year BE2455 on Wednesday at Jangwat Lampang (descendants of Lampany's King of Lanna Period). In the year BE2468 (1925) when his uncle had passed away, LP Kasem became a novice monk to study Pali Language in Bangkok, Wat Setuwan and returned to Lampang for indepth study of Pali at Wat Seelom and Wat Bunyawaht.

He was outstanding in his studies and got first in his Pali examinatuon at Wat Setuwan in BE2476. Reaching the age of 21, he was ordained as a monk in Wat Bunyeun and his preceptor was Tahn Jow Koon Tammajindah. His ordained name was Kemagoh Pikkhu.

In Changmai, he met Luang Phor Krubah Gaen who was a famous forest monk and LP Kasem studied under him as a disciple. They went to Tudong in the remote forest to practise dhamma and sammadhdti.

He practised hard in dhamma and sammadhdti. He wanted to perfect his practise to attain the highest sammahdti, so he went to the cementry in the burial ground watching dead corpse being burnt to ashes under the hot sun or rain. Regardless whether it was under the hot sun or rain, he would simply sat quietly and watch.

He had accomplished without food for as long as 49 days and sat in sammahdti for 3 months without shelter under hot sun and rain without complain.

LP Kasem only bathed once a year without any stench or foul odour from his body though perspiration pouring during hot sunny day. What surprise most was he never suffered mosquito bite without shelter at the cementry.

LP Kasem was not keen of making amulets as he was devoted to practise dhamma and sammadhti in the remote forest. When people approached him kindly for help and protection as soldiers in Lampang were sent to Cambodian or Burmese border to fight. They received bamboo leaves with protective spell written and it saved many lives and soon LP Kasem became famous for making protective amulets.

Luang Por Kasem did not carry anything with him. In his possession was just the alms bowl and his robe he worn during the practise of sammadhdti without any footwear. LP Kasem mentioned that as a forest monk there was no requirement of having any possessions. Just a robe to cover his body would be sufficient. Many a times, layman gave him things but he simply gave them to other monks.

LP Kasem who a monk who had no desire of comfort as even when he was sleeping, he did not use any pillow as that was considered as luxury. Luang Por Kasem simply would sleep with his body in full prostrate position similar to his sammahdti practise spot. He could had all the luxuries in life for being the descendent of royal family in Lampang but he asked for nothing in life, just finding the truth in life.

Luang Phor Kasem passed away on Jan 15, 2539 (7:42 pm) at the Lampang hospital. He was 84. A memorial and mausoleum were built at the area by the cemetery and his dead body was placed in a glass coffin for reasons that make yet many local people upset. However he had reputedly never wished to be burned.

LP Waen Sujinno Wat DoiMaePang

Luang Pho Waen was born on 16 February 1883 (BE 2431) in Tambon Na Pong, Mueang District of Loei, Northeast (Isan) of Thailand to a blacksmith's family. He was named Yarn and had one elder sister. He ordained as a novice in 1892 at Wat Bodhi Chai in Na Pong at the age of nine to fulfill the wish of his mother when she died while he was five years old. At the age of 13, he became a Naen (novice monk) at Wat Poh Chai, Loei province. He studied with a number of teachers and later ordained as a monk at a temple in Hua Taparn District of Ubon Ratchathani at the age of 21.
As a novice monk, he studied the Dharma and Pali, even at that young age he showed exceptional ability. He eventually went Thudong (forest monk) with his teacher, Ajahn Wuhan, travelling from Loei to Ubon Ratchathani, where he remained to learn Dhamma from another teacher, Ajahn Sing.
During his Thudong, he met many disciples of Ajahn Mun whom he had wanted to further his studies under. Luang Pho Waen met Ajahn Mun in BE 2462 (at the age of 31) at Bahn Kor forest, Udon Thani province. Luang Por Mun Bhuridatta in Udon Thani who taught him the pursuance of a secluded life and the practice of meditation and Dhamma in the jungles. Subsequently Luang Pho Waen travelled very widely in the Northeast of Thailand in search of isolated places where he could meditate. His travelling also took him to Bangkok where he met Chao Khun Phra Upali Gunupamacariya of Wat Bowonniwet in 1921 with whom Luang Pho Waen spent several years studying and practising the Dhamma. Later Chao Khun Phra Upali took him to Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai where Luang Pho Waen decided to change from the Maha-Nikaya sect of Buddhism to the stricter Dhammayut sect.
Later he went Thudong again with Ajahn Dteu. Luang Pho Waen, endured many difficulties during his Thudong, he encountered ghosts, wild animals and other dangers but was never afraid despite warnings from local villagers. It was his wish to experience and learn from everything.
Luang Pho Waen spent most of his monkhood as a forest monk, travelling from one province to another on foot, climbing hills, crossing rivers and deep forests. He had also went as far as Laos, Cambodia, Burma and even Vietnam on Thudong. At BE 2470, age 39, Luang Pho Waen arrived in Lampang.
He met another disciple of Ajahn Mun called Ajahn Keow. He was told that Ajahn Mun was in Chiang Mai. Luang Pho Waen quickly Thudong to Chiang Mai to look for Ajahn Mun. Finally he met Ajahn Mun and Ajahn Dteu at Wat Chedi Luang. Ajahn Mun officially accepted Luang Pho Waen as his disciple. He studied Dhamma at Wat Chedi Luang.
After Ajahn Mun left Wat Chedi Luang for Thudong, Luang Pho Waen also went Thudong in Chiang Mai. He stayed at Wat Huainumrin in Chiang Mai Province for 10 years. During his long stay in Wat Huainumrin, he stayed most of his time in forests and only returning to the temple during the rainy seasons (Khao Phansa).
Luang Pho Waen travelled extensively by foot through jungles and across mountains and even ventured to Burma and India where he paid homage to several historic Buddhist sites. However, in 1955 news of a foot injury sustained during his stay in seclusion of Wat Paa Ban Pong in Mae Tang District, Chiang Mai, reached Phra Ajahn Noo Suchitto of Wat Doi Mae Pang who later arranged for Luang Pho Waen to stay in Wat Doi Mae Pang permanently. He resided in Wat Doi Mae Pang until his passing away.
Luang Pho Waen entered Maharaj Hospital on 15 April 1985 when he was found unable to eat or move and was operated on 4 June 1985 in order to feed him through a tube which was inserted into his stomach. However, complications developed and Phra Ajahn Noo, the abbot of Wat Doi Mae Pang, requested doctors not to perform any more operations as he wanted Luang Pho Waen to rest peacefully. His request was accepted by doctors and the Chiang Mai Governor, Mr. Chaiya Punsiriwong.
On 2 July 1985 at 9:54 pm, Luang Pho Waen finally died at the age of 102 years and 5 months after having been in the monkhood for almost 90 years. He was given a royal-sponsored bathing ceremony at Sala Ang Klaew in Chiang Mai University which was attended by the King and Queen of Thailand as well as the general public. His remains were cremated at a Royal Funeral on 16 January 1986.
